The endless rope

Yes. The length of the line does not affect pilot operation. The pilot is delivered with a a rope with standard length of 235 cm, which corresponds to a spacing between the external snap hooks of 180 cm. This default length can be increased or decreased. Be careful, a rope that is too short can limit the movements of the tiller. You can ask for a longer or shorter rope in the message attached to your order. You can also modify this length yourself (see next question).

Yes. This is possible. You will find tutorials on the web for making closed-loop ropes (search for “endless splice”). Be careful to use the same diameter and type of rope as the original: 6mm and type: polyester sheath “cotton touch” on 3 strand core cable. Of course, the new rope will have to follow the same “route” through the various pulleys as the original rope.

Program of the pilot

Yes. See the “open source” page of this website.

Installation

The pilot works ok in aluminium hull. Steel hull: this type of installation has not been tested. Proper operation of the pilot is not guaranteed in this case.

Calibration

If the sea is rough; do the calibration anyway. It is better to have an “approximate” calibration than no calibration at all. You can re-do the calibration procedure later, when conditions are calm.

Yes. We recommend re-running the calibration procedure approximately once a year. For example at the start of each season. Otherwise, it must be redone in the following cases:

  • If you change boat
  • If you make major changes to your boat, likely to modify the metal masses: for example if you change the engine, or if you install a generator.
  • If you move the electronic control box in the boat, or if you change its orientation.
  • If you change navigation area. For example if you leave Europe for the West Indies.
